I'd recently exited a long relationship on bad terms, and she was in a place where some of her addictions were winning. I felt a lot of guilt for not being there, as she probably needed an anchor. Someone shared a great analogy with me: if you see someone you love out in the ocean drowing, you rush out to save them. If they fight you or try to pull you under as well, at some point you may have to let go. That really resonated with me, and this song became a sort of catharsis for my mentally 'letting go.'
Happy Coda: despite the somewhat fatalistic angle on the subject, in the end my friend pulled herself together fantastically well and has beaten her demons with gusto. We continue to stay in touch all these years later and are the best of friends.
Musically, this was somewhat inspired by 'Salt Marie Celeste' by Nurse With Wound, in the sense of a gradual descent into the depths (not trying to compare outright...Stapleton's work is without equal IMHO).
